Q. How much does a log home cost? There is no set price per square foot for a log home, because each home is as unique as the people who live in them. The well designed homes that we have recently built have finished for a cost of $165.00 - $200.00 per square foot. Larger homes can cost less per square foot than smaller homes. Your choice of finishing will have an effect on the final price. Contact us for assistance in creating a design that is yours and fits within your budget. Q. What is included in your package price? Our log work is complete including primary window and door frames, roof support logs, second floor logs, log stair and railings, electrical access, thru-bolts, reassembly labour, 10' high log walls, and all visible cuts are sanded. Our log work comes complete with insulation gaskets and our special Air Leakage Warranty. Stain, transportation and crane work costs will be arranged and charged to the owner at cost. Q. What Species of logs do you use? Most of our log walls are built from Lodgepole pine or select Alberta White Spruce. Red Cedar is available on request. Our roof and support beams are constructed from select Alberta White Spruce because of its superior size and strength. Q. What size of Logs do you use? Our most common size is 12-14 inches at mid-span measurement. These logs would have a 16-20 inch butt size. Smaller and larger logs are available. Q. Can you send me some floor plans? We have never built 2 homes from the same floorplan. Our staff will help you design a log home that will fit your lifestyle. Spar-Log can supply the design and plans for you, or work with your designer. Q. Where do you build? Most of our homes are in Western Canada and in the mid-western states. We have shipped to Japan and we also have a construction site in Austria, where we build for the European market. Q. What size of homes do you build? Our most common size is 1000-3000 square feet and because of the diversification of our company, we have built buildings from 100 - 13,000 square feet. Size is not the determining factor for our company; design, quality, long-term sustainability and customer satisfaction are. Q. Are your homes energy efficient? Yes! By combining our Double-cut log fitting system with our Spar Log Air Leakage Warranty the result is a superb energy efficient log home. Q. How long have you been building log homes? Wayne Sparshu has been building since 1977 and Glen Sparshu has been building since 1980 about half a century of experience between the two professionals. Q. Is settling a problem? Settling is not a problem when properly addressed during design and construction. Q. What is an "Air Leakage Warranty?" All logs shrink, to some extent, regardless of their moisture content at construction time. When wood shrinks it changes shape and therefore a high quality log home must have the following features built into the log work. Your log home will take on the average of 4 years to reach stable moisture content and this is why you owe it to yourself to know that your house will be as Air-Tight 4 years down the road as it was the day it was built. At Spar-Log we provide you with a written warranty that your home will be free from "Air Leakage" when re-assembled and after the drying process has taken place. Q. What kind of Stain is best? The best type of Stain is the one that penetrates the outer fibre of the log, protects it from excessive moisture penetration and still allows the logs to breathe. All stains break down from the Ultraviolet exposure, and an excellent stain will breakdown in a manner where it slowly oxidized into a powder and blows away. When re-coat time comes, you sweep or wash the house and re-coat. If using an excellent stain, you should never have to remove the basecoat of stain. We will recommend an outstanding stain for your home. Q. What makes Spar-Log Homes different?
